I started a Word Processing business in Aug., l987, and have made only $400.00. I advertise in college, legal, and local newspapers. I've sent mailings to Dr's., hospitals and lawyers, with only one response from a lawyer. I also contracted with an information line to give out my phone number to people who
are seeking secretarial services. I'm an experienced legal secretary and would like to deal with attorneys. My attorney contacts cannot use my services as they have secretaries. How do I reach other attorneys? Going "door to "door is not my cup of tea!
Thanks -------Debi

Hi, All...
New on the board, searching for a Consulting Agreement "boilerplate." I've been self-employed for 'bout 20 years, and 'til now have always done business on either a handshake or per-project contract basis. But now I've got a client who wants me to suggest some sort of continuing arrangement, essentially to keep them posted on happenings in a few fields I know about - and that are of possible future interest to them - but that are
out of the mainstream of their present business.
Defining responsibilities and monthly compensation ain't the problem; just the traditional opening "whereases" and closing "therefores," or whatever. I can edit anything; I'm just stuck looking at a blank piece of paper. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance --
-- Ted E.

Couldn't help noticing an off-hand remark in a response of yours re: office space. As a NYC resident, WHERE CAN I GET FRESH NOT DRIED HERBS IN JANUARY? This would help our piece of culinary mind during our first New York City winter.
Bless you.

I have spent the greater part of the past several days learning Byline, a new Ashton-Tate desktop publishing program. It's straight-forward and accordingly fairly-to-use. With a list price of $295, it's mid-range. The programs that sell for a hundred dollars or less, from the reviews I've read, don't provide
desktop publishing as you'd come to know it with Ventura, Pagemaker or Byline in the MS-DOS environment. On the other hand, the lowest price we've seen for Ventura is over $500 with Pagemaker not far behind. Of course, you get more capability for your money. However, getting some good results from Byline, which I hope will sell a company we're working on selling one of our packaged seminars to, laser printing without desktop publishing is about what dot matrix or daisy wheel is to laser. What a difference! For those of you with word processing services, I seriously urge you to begin thinking about offering documents using desktop publishing software for proposals, reports, etc. First, I believe it will increase your income -- you'll be able to charge more for greater value -- but within the foreseeable future, it will be necessary to be competitive. With word processing now in such a competitive market, I think now
is the time to get onboard. I haven't learned all the wrinkles of Byline-- things like bulleted indents are frustrating me, and I haven't really begun mixing graphics and with text, which, of course, is the heart of DTP, but I am impressed with the results.

Drew, I saw your note to Paul about questions on legal issues for independent contractor use. I follow this area very closely (though I'm not an attorney) as part of my consulting work to set up telecommuting programs for employers. I don't know Alaska law but most states follow the gist of the Federal statutes. If you have a specific question I'll try to help you or point you to
a resource.
